Wisdom and Happiness

Proverbs 3:13-18

Happy the person who finds wisdom,

the person who acquires understanding;

14 for her profit exceeds that of silver,

gaining her is better than gold,

15 she is more precious than pearls —

nothing you want can compare with her.

16 Long life is in her right hand,

riches and honor in her left.

17 Her ways are pleasant ways,

and all her paths are peace.

18 She is a tree of life to those who grasp her;

whoever holds fast to her will be made happy.

Who would have thought that wisdom brings happiness? I never reflected much on this, so when I read it today it made me stop and think. As I pondered on this concept, I realized that most wise people I know are happy. Most have a sense of peace and joy surrounding them.

These Words than are Truth. Those who continue to stay humble as they gain understanding and knowledge, they find happiness. The list of benefits in verses 14-18 is long. Wisdom is:

  • profit exceeds silver

  • better than gold

  • more precious than pearls

  • long life in her right hand

  • riches and honor in her left

  • ways are pleasant

  • ALL paths are peace

  • tree of life (my favorite)

  • holding fast to her will make you happy

Now, the word "happy" for me is kind of... not sure how to put it, but I find happiness more fleeting. I, personally, would love to read the word, "joy" here. That the person who finds wisdom has joy. Joy, in my opinion, is deeper and longer lasting.

I don't see wisdom as fleeting. I don't Solomon is hinting that at all when he says wisdom bring happiness. However, there probably is a small amount of Truth to realizing that if wisdom begins to puff you up and humility goes away than wisdom could be fleeting.

From these verses today we can see that gaining wisdom is healthy and positive. If we know God wants us to have it, than why not begin to walk in it? Why not ask God for wisdom? The Word says we can! If more people became wise in HIS Truth and understanding, and not their own man-made wisdom, than maybe the world wouldn't be as crazy.

Stop today and be thankful that He WANTS you to gain wisdom. Just reflect on the fact that HE will give it to you.

Love and blessings,

Rose
