16 “Now when you fast, don’t go around looking miserable, like the hypocrites. They make sour faces so that people will know they are fasting. Yes! I tell you, they have their reward already!17 But you, when you fast, wash your face and groom yourself,18 so that no one will know you are fasting — except your Father, who is with you in secret. Your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Fasting... Many people love to do it and believe in it. They experience breakthrough and answers to prayer while fasting. The couple times that I truly felt led by Holy Spirit to fast, I did experience breakthrough. I did not struggle with hunger. I knew God was leading it.
Many people are now saying that fasting once a month is healthy for your body. That doing a cleanse from food and allowing a "rest" for your body brings better digestion overall. I have often found that concepts given in the Word of God are beneficial for us, we just have to apply them.
If you stop to think about it, when you fast you still need water... Who is Jesus? What does He bring to us? He is the SOURCE of Life and the LIVING WATER.
The teachings of Jesus in these chapters all seem to lead to one thought: Don't be prideful when you are doing something God wants you to do. Just go about your business when you are listening to Him and following His lead. It is all simple and done discreetly.
Whether or not you choose to fast is up to you. My encouragement is that whatever you feel led to do by Holy Spirit, do it. When He is leading it, He will bring the answers you are seeking. When He is in it, He will bless it. No need to announce to the world what it is that you are doing, just be faithful. That will allow you to be the glass of water and life to those around you.
